10/13 Inservice Reflection

We discussed Student led Conferences and are looking forward to this change in how we do conferences.  In school, some kids have said that their parents will not be bringing them.  I think it's important that, as a school, we make sure the message gets home that kids are required to come.  It's kind of all or nothing... either they come with their family members or no one comes.  Of course, if parents would like time alone with the teacher, that can be set up for a different time.

We need to create an agenda for conferences to help guide students lead their conference.

Possibly create a survey for the end of the year - lots of open-ended reflections could be used.

Maybe have kids do a brief read aloud where they would share a section of the story and then explain why he or she picked that one.

I've already, after the first 6 weeks, noticed a change in our Morning Meetings.  We've had increased involvement in additional staff joining our MM, and it makes a nice difference.

REFLECTION on goal #1

Goal (#2) Educational Focus - NGSS, ELA (Calkins)  or MATH:

To develop PLP's for each 5/6 student with a focus on SMART goal setting and reflection.

Rationale
How does this goal connect/ link to the Framework For Teaching Domains, your IPDP, student data, School or Supervisory Union goals and/or action plans and initiatives?

Act 77

This is a WWSU Action Step
This goal ties in with many of the Framework for Teaching Domains.   The planning and preparation domain directly relate to the demonstration of  knowledge of students as well as setting up instructional outcomes.  PLP’s are a personalized - so very individualized.  One of the goals of the PLP will be to help students gain a better understanding of themselves as learners, I will also help guide them through this and will also gain a better understanding of who they are as individuals.  Classroom environment is also an area that will be addressed.  Students will work together as well as on their own to develop and reflect on their goals.  It will be important to establish an environment of respect and rapport.  The domain of Instruction is addressed through communicating with students and engaging in student learning.

Assessment Methods to Validate Attainment of Goal
What qualitative and or quantitative data will you use to measure attainment of your goal?  (What method will you use to measure or monitor your progress?)

Frequent monitoring of student blogs and sites;
Baseline data of how student led conferences go in November, to be compared with conferences in March;

Monitoring of goal progress through conferencing with students.

Transferable Skills @ Moretown

Week of September 30th

This week we spent a lot of time discussing transferable skills with 5th and 6th grade students.  We have decided to focus on Communication and Citizenship to start.  Students had fun brain storming what these skills mean.... as well as what "transferable skills" actually means.  Kids enjoyed working together to represent these skills by making posters, skits as well as by being interviewed....

Stages Personalized Learning Environments Reflection

September 4, 2015
Well..... in reflecting on where I fall in the Stages of Personalized Learning Environments....it is clear that I've got MUCH work to do!  Once our school receives it's new Chromebooks, we will be able to embark on the work of PLPs.  While I do feel I have a good handle on who my students are - at least the students I am fortunate enough to have for a 2nd year in a row, we are just at the beginning of the PLP process.

I'd like to work on getting to know my students through the PLP process, which will eventually be student led with guidance from me.  Additionally, our school is anticipating it's first student-led conferences in November... up until this point, the conferences have been teacher led/directed.  I really look forward to this as well as this entire PLP process.  I can see in what we've done so far with students (work on transferable skills) that the kids are excited about the transition and move toward personalized learning.  I can feel it in my classroom and in the building itself.  So... while I know we have much work ahead of us, I look forward to it and to growing along with my students.
